I was recently given a 2000 ford focus wagon.I repaced the fluid
from the transmission. It was full of metal pieces and very dark.
almost black in color. The car has 130 K miles.I dont think
that the previos owner did any maintanance.I seems like it is
shifting better but it still skips occasionally.Do you think the transmission is gone or should I try changing the fluid+filter
again after a week of so.

I've changed many pans on transmissions over the years and they all have metal in the bottom, usually on a magnet. 130 k miles isnt that much. Since you have already changed the filter, look into having the fluid professionally flushed. look for a shop that carries bg products ( bgfindashop.com ) and have them flush it. it should be about $130. if you want to go cheap you can probably find someone like jiffylube to do it for $80 but I promise you it wont be as good as a bg flush.

It would not hurt to change the fluid and filter again. The metal pieces is probably the clutch packs worn very badly. Any time you have metal in transmission it will cause the valve body to not function it will stick or hang. When you change the fluid and filter just remember most torque converters don't have drain plugs and you cant get all the old fluid out. So it would not hurt to change it again. If that don't help I would probably check on getting it rebuilt. slick 50 makes a good transmission additive Iv used it before. Good luck hope this helps

Some metal in the pan is very common. Go ahead and change it again and tri it out. It will probably take a few hundred miles berfore the new fluid starts showing improvement. Just make sure you clean the pan up real good and replace the filter.

In my experience the transmission is " history " and the metal and dirt etc, are and were the only things helping to keep it going. When you change the fluid and put ALL clean fluid in.....things tend to happen....transmission will stop working all together.

You got metal in tranny you got problem. I would try desperately to find an HONEST shop. Maybe someone can help you find one. Ask some of your friends.I don't trust any repair shop, I have seen too many rip offs.I would not drive the car till it gets fixed, you could cause more damage. Oil changes don't help

Before you replace or rebuild your transmission, try an additive called TRANS-X. It is guaranteed to improve shifting. If it doesn't work, then it's trany time.
