How to deal with coarse material?

I have a scarf that feels like burlap, practically. It itches, and is prickly. Can I throw it in the laundry with fabric softener? Anything I can do to make it feel like normal clothing?

keep washing it till it gets where u think its soft itll be awhile its one of those keeper scarfs

It depends on the fiber content. I would try hand washing it first in cold water and Woolite. It may just have a lot of sizing in the fabric. Be prepared to have to iron or steam it if this is the case as the reason heavy sizing is used is to help the fabric hold it's shape.
