You will very likely develop some swelling and possibly bruising. It is helpful for this type of injury to keep the injured part elevated and put ice on it. If you can keep it elevated above your heart that is best. Lay on your back on the floor and put your foot up on the couch or a chair. If you have a bag of frozen veggies such as peas or corn, that makes a very good ice pack that conforms to your body better than a bag of ice cubes or a store bought ice pack. Cover your foot with a paper towel and place the bag of veggies on your toe. You may find some relief in taping your big toe to the next toe to keep in immobile. Even if it is broken there is little a doctor can do to help it. Take ibuprofen for the pain and to help with the swelling. Keep it elevated and iced. It'll hurt for a good long time and you may not be able to wear your shoes for a few days. Go to the doctor if the swelling gets bad, but you'll probably be fine. You may loose your toenail, too.

scream some really really bad words and then put some ice on it and elevate your foot- to decrease swelling. If it still hurts in a couple of days see a doctor. tc
