The proper day is January 6th, which is the epiphany. The epiphany is when the 3 wise men arrived in Bethlehem after Jesus' birth.

It really is up to you, however.

There are two "traditional" days to take down the Christmas tree...
January 1st and January 6th. The first is, of course, the first day of the new year and, basically, life begins again 'as usual' January 2nd. January 6th is "Epiphany" or "12th Night" or "the Feast of the 3 Kings" and is the older end of the Christmas season. Either on that day or the day after is the acceptable dates for taking down the tree. Some people take down the tree on the 1st and the rest of the of the Christmas decorations on the 6th.

It is the day you and your family decide to take it down. Some families take the tree down on New Year's Day. Others take it down on Epiphany- January 6. Epiphany markes the end of the 12 days of Christmas, if you start countiing on Christmas morning.Others take it down some other day. Your choice.

the rule of thumb(stupid saying) is to wait 6 days after the new year. Or till the tree dies. If artificial hold to the 6 day thingy. I would leave mine up all year if people would not think I was a bit looney

You can take it down the day after Christmas. It doesn't really matter. I usually take mine down on Jan. 2nd.
