It is next to the fuel tank and secured to a small bracket. It should be easily visible if you look under the car, behind the rear passenger side wheel, on the forward part of the gas tank. When I lived in Germany, i had a 1991 525 and changed mine myself. It took about five minutes. Make sure to install fuel filter in the correct direction of fuel flow. :-)
I would also recommend changing the rubber fuel lines when you do this since they are prone to rotting.....esp in this old of a car. I had a bad fuel smell and sputtering in my 5'er and that was the problem.
The rubber fuel lines are from the fuel tank to the filter, then from filter to metal lines leading to the engine compartment. There are also rubber lines on top of the engine (under the plastic cover) front and back of the "fuel bar".
There is also an access port (for fuel pump access) in the trunk that makes changing the rubber lines very easy. Good luck and see the links!

You may check near the fuel tank or underneath the car.
