You should talk to the coach at your school to find out the requirements. Even if she makes it seems too hard for you don't let it scare you. Show that you are determined to get on her good side. If there are things that you do not understand you should ask the cheerleaders who have already made the team. The best thing you can do is get into the best shape possible. Go to www.mspineapple.com. It will show everything from stunting, to jumps, to all the perfect workouts. People don't usually realize it, but cheerleading involves a lot of coordination, flexibility, balance, strength, cardio, and dance. It is a necessity to be a good dancer and a huge plus to be a good choreographer. So, buffen up and Good Luck!

All cheering squads are different and required different skills, but I can tell you you'll probably want to have a few dancing skills and have rhythm to follow up with their dancing moves. Tumbling *may* be required and stunting might be, to. So, watch the cheerleaders at their next game or better yet talk to a cheerleader. If you find out they do tumbling, you might want to sign up for a tumbling class. You may also want to start cardio excercise.

Here's a great site for cheerleaders:

hey i am a cheerleader and this is my first year too! so here are some things you need to know!!

*Be a roll modle!! -trust me on this one! when you go out there at tryouts, games, anywhere are need to be a good roll model!! your coach will know you want this more than ever!

*Know the basics of stunting- stunting is HUGE! the three things about stunting is that there are 4 people involved in each stunt. the backspot, the flyer, and the 2 bases! (if you need more tips on each you can just email me my email will be at the end!)

*Know the basic jumps- jumps and also huge in cheerleading. the three main jumps that all cheerleading squads do are toe-touches, herkies, and pikes! (again you can e-mail me)

*Most cheerleading squads NEED tumbling- tumbling is a very big part in cheerleading. if you dont have tumbling you can visit a local cheerleading gym or gymnastics gym. they will have spotters there for you.

*Splits- dont even know where to start with this.... splits are something you are born with OR you have to work at them. there are three types of splits. Right, Left, and Center. if you do not have splits make sure you stretch every day and try to get them. when i didnt have my splits i would sit in a straddle or any type of stretch that helps and do homework or watch TV! doing something gets your mind off of the fact that what you may be doing hurts. you need to have flexability to have splits! (if you dont understand this one and if you want more tips you may wanna email me)

*motions-motions are used in everything! when you hit a motion lets say a high V you need to be tight when you hit it. when you are in a high V and someone pushes down your arm your arm shouldnt go down.. just be aware it is really hard to be tight as long as it looks like you are tight you will do fine! also make sure you know the basic motions and how to do them. some of them are High V, Low V, T, baby T, Left high v, left low v, right high v, right low v, daggar, FIGHT MOTION!

*always be positive- if you are cheering in anything you always want to SMILE! always be smiling at games and performances or in fount of judges! it is also good to have facials!

**********if you want more tips on these things just e-mail me at *************

Take dance and gymnastic classes. You need to know how to do jumps, move in time to the music, and have certain gymnastic skills - back handspring, etc. Watch some cheerleaders and see how their movements are crisp and sharp but have flow and movement to them. See if there is a jr. cheerleading program or something that you can get involved with while you learn.

Flexibily, endurance, coordination, voice projection, emotional projection and so forth are all very important, but you also need to be very committed and enthusiastic. Sounds like you have the last two covered. :^)

Work on hitting motions (hi-v, low-v, t, daggers,candlesticks...etc.), dance, smiling(facials),flexibility, tumbling, and you might want to start working out (running, push ups, abs,...etc.) and practice cheers (bringing your words up, yelling clearly and loudly, and smiling)!!!! GOOD LUCK!!
