It's also possible that your smoke detector is dusty inside , try vacuuming it if you are sure the battery is good.

If you have a battery tester, check that the battery is new and registering at full power when tested. If not sure, buy a new battery. That would be the first thing I would check.
Smoke detectors are not expensive to replace. You may just want to do that (and they often come with the batteries included...but still test the battery's potency). Your life is worth more than the cost of replacing the unit.
Be safe and good luck!

Clean the lens also, for some reason some will chirp if the lens gets a bit cloudy. If cleaning it fixes it, throw it away and get another. Smoke detectors work on that cloud of smoke, so what difference is a cloudy lens? If a detector gets dirty enough to detect the cloud on the lens it should think the cloudiness is smoke and start SCREAMING. Those things are too reasonably priced to keep one you aren't sure of.

Sorry if I sound somewhat curt but I just don't fool around with safety issues, especially when it comes to my family.

Happy New Year.

leave it without a battery for about 60 seconds. make sure the new battery is actually "new". if it still chirps, put in another new battery to make sure. if it still chirps, return it to the store where you bought it originally as it needs to be disposed of properly (radioactive material).

How often? If it is about once a minute, it is a weak battery. Was the battery you just put in brand new? How long have you had the battery sitting around?

I agree with most double check your battery, but definately just replace the whole unit. Like others said things can just go wacko. The sensors and stuff just go bad. Its chirping to warn you its malfunctioning.... Just replace it.
