The main point of confusion comes from the attempt to mix singular (instrument) with plural (drums). In the context you use, it won't be proper grammAR (note that) whether you use "is" or "are". To be correct , you must either say "My favorite instrument is the drum" (the implication being that you have no preference which kind of drum; you like them all) or "My favorite instruments are the drums" (stating directly that which you only implied in the previous example).
I hope that helps clarify things...try not to mix singular and plural if you can help it.

Subject and verb agree.
Drums are my favorite instrument.
My favorite instrument is drums. The use of the article "the" usually designates a specific set, drums, instrument etc. Although usage may differ regionally.
Or, My favorite instrurment is a drum set. The use of the indefinite article, "a" is for the singular noun not identifying any specific drum set.
My favorite instrument is drums. Slingerland makes the [definite article "the" speaking of specific] drums I like best.

Better spelling is 'grammar.'
The correct grammar in this case would be "...instrument is..." because your verb needs to agree with your subject, not the object. The subject is "instrument." Therefore, since the subject is singular, the verb needs to be singular as well. When in doubt, remove the rest of the sentence and leave yourself with only subject and verb. Then you'll be better able to see how it should go.
If "drums" becomes the subject (if you turn the sentence around: "drums are my favorite instrument") then the verb would have to be plural to agree with a plural subject. Hope that helps and makes at least some sense.

Is the drum, or "is the drum set" or more properly if you are talking about the traditional (rock) drums "My favourite instrument is the drum trap"

The answer depends on how many "drums" you are talking about. For example: If you are talking about a set of drums then you would be talking about one instrument and would use "is." If you are talking about liking to play drums in general (snare drums, bongo drums, kettle drums, etc) you would use the word "are" because you are referring to several different types of drums.

To use "is" you would have to add a specifier to "drum" - "bongo", "snare", "bass", etc., since there are so many types of drum.
"Instrument" must be pluralized when talking about drums as plural, or you can say " My favorite instrument is the drum set", thereby making it a singular.
So to be correct, "My favorite instruments are drums".

Let's see...would "Drums" be plural or singular? that's what ends up deciding the grammer. i'm not exactly sure if its plural or singular - but i would say
"my favorite instument is the drums"
cuz u wouldn't say
"my favorite instrument are the violin"
or
"my favorite instrument are the tuba"
or
"my favorite instrument are the sax"
but, don't take my word for it - i'm not sure.

It is better grammer to say "is". In the case of your sentence, "My favorite instrument" is your subject. Hope this helps!
