hmm....i remember watching a PBS show about this. In it it actually discusses a formula that someone has put forth about this issue (i'm sorry i'm not being specific, i just can remember the name, but his is accepted by the scientific community as an expert).
The formula has about 7 factors, include such things as number of stars in the universe, average number of planets per star, probability of life existing, probability of life being intelligent, etc.
and using conservative numbers (i think it was 10% of life being intelligent, etc.) the formula came up with a number of like 10,000 civilizations that we might be able to contact.
it's basically a consensus that life does exist elsewhere in the universe, however, the idea that there are aliens in UFO's circling our planet is a totally different topic (and i would say rather unlikely, though not impossible as there should be aliens much more technologically advanced).

Well the Drake equations says the chances of aliens civilizations existing is fairly good, however I'm not the best at math so the Drake equation is just mumbo jumbo to me because i can't understand it, however with all the vastness of space out there i believe there must be other life out there.

It depends on what you consider an alien :] There's probably a 99.9% that there are other living beings in the universe besides us on earth :]

The scientific community agrees almost unanimously that extraterrestrial life probably exists SOMEWHERE in the universe. But will we ever meet them? That's the debate.

Scientists think that, if microbes can survive here (Chile's Atacama Desert, where it rains once every other decade), they can survive on Mars..
