LOL, I have to agree with Brit Punk. There is no better way, IMO, than to start with "It was a dark and stormy night." Second best is when a book starts by describing a dark, stormy (or even just rainy) night. But not all books can or should start that way, so other ways I really like books to start are with: -- a sentence or paragraph that brings the reader right into the scene and action. It doesn't have to be all description or smack in the middle of something happening, but it has a word here and a phrase there that clues us in. And makes us want to be there or to see what happens next. -- some kind of assertion statement. My least favorite ways to start a book: -- dialogue first thing. If I don't know who the characters are yet, I probably won't care what they're saying. It would have to be very witty or interesting. -- a physical description of a character, such as "She was so pretty. She had blue eyes and long blond hair..." Amateursville. -- too much flowery description, pages that go on and on about the land or something.
