Hi there,
Some of the best areas are Hunters Creek, Dr Phillps, Windermere, Waterford Lakes and Avalon park. All are around 10-15 miles of downtown Orlando. These are the areas with the better schools - maybe a little more expensive but its worth it.
I would stay away from Kissimmee etc - very touristy and 'Disney" -which is great when you are on vacation but not for real life.
Orlando is like most cities - good and bad but on the whole I have to say it leans towards the good side. I am from the UK and it took me a while to get used to it but there's a lot on offer there.
If you need anymore info just let me know - I am in the Mortgage Industry and I have a good friend thats a Realtor that may be able to give some more advice. I hope this was helpful. Good Luck!

East Orlando is the best area to move in my opinion. I researched the area before moving from Washington, D.C., and settled on Avalon Park subdivision. There are GREAT schools here all within easy walking distance for kids, great family life, almost no crime, affordable housing, and still just 30 minutes from all the theme parks and Atlantic beaches. Avalon Park has a terrific town center, banks, grocery stores, gas station, restaurants, and monthly events right in the middle of everything. Go to www.avalonpark.com to see. Plenty of rentals and new homes to buy.

Move to Seminole County District. They have better schools than Orange County. I recommend Casselberry, Longwood, or Winter Springs. All of the following cities are also in Seminole County:

Altamonte Springs, Oviedo
Casselberry, Sanford
Lake Mary, Winter Springs,
Longwood

Here is a website to learn about moving to Seminole County District:

im in high school and im going to tell u the truth. I go to one of the roughest schools in orlando. No school system is safe. no nieghborhood is safe. Already this past year(2006) our murder rate went up. I say dont move here. this place is crowded enough. Take it from a student. If im saying this it must be true.
