I have a 98 ford escort. The starter drags, it's running rough, and puffs out of exhaust. But there is no smoke coming out the exhaust and it is not knocking. But has no power. Could you explain to me what could be wrong with my car??

depending on the mileage and motor it might need a tune up to needing a new timing belt, doubtful that the starter is dragging. give a little more detail like if it started all of a sudden or over time, motor, mileage and recent mods or repairs.

You didn't mention your check engine lite, is it on ?? Does it drive at all ?? you mention lacking power, does that mean poor acceleration, mis fire, or what . These cars are computer controlled and the symptoms are the answers to the problems. I would take a look at the throttle position sensor, it has a lot to do with what you are experiencing. There may be more but need more info.

When was the last time you had a tune up? You may also want to check the air filter to see if it needs changing. It may not be the starter dragging, but simply in need of a tune up.

Sounds like you either have an engine misfire, or a mechanical problem. You might need to run a compression test to make sure that you don't have a burned valve or ring problem.
