I was quoted $685+ at the dealer for this 1/2 day checkup. How necessary is this if I am having no trouble. I will have the checkup if necessary but it seems like a lot of money to put out to change some fluids etc and look things over...Thanks in advance for any opinions..

NO, it isn't necessary to have a 30K checkup. Look in yor owner's manual and see what maintenance is required at 30k and get them done. The 30K checkup is what many shops use to make easy money.

You can take it to a dealer, or an independent shop. If you take it to an independent shop, make sure to keep your receipts for the warranty. Having the work done at an independent shop will not void the extended warranty, or the factory warranty if it's still in effect.

Some of the things that might need to be replaced are:
Transmission fluid service (make SURE they use ATF +4, any other fluid in a Chrysler trans may cause problems)
Spark plugs (unless platinum)
Engine coolant flush (I would recommend even if it has the longer life coolant that is orange and is supposed to last 5 years)
Air filter
Oil change (depending on when the last one was, of course)

Chances are, if you have all of these things done separately, it will be less expensive than the 30K checkup. Call and price the recommended 30K services separately.

The belts and hoses and some other items it will say should be inspected, but they probably already do this inspection everytime the oil is changed at no extra charge, but they do add the charge for inspecting these items into the 30k service. (Almost any good shop will inspect these items when doing an oil change, when they are starting to get bad, they will suggest replacing them).

Very necessary. 30k miles is about the life limit for many fluids in your car other then the oil. Plus, other items can wear out or need to be replaced by now. In short, If you haven't had any problems and want to keep it that way, get the 30k service done.

That price seems very high though. Shop around. Even between Chrysler and Dodge or even two Chrysler dealers the price can be very different.

You DO NOT HAVE TO GO TO A DEAL! as long as the check up is done. basicly an oil change and record of it is all you need. I work at dealership, to continue the 7-70 warranty you need only do your maintinence! but be leary of someplaces that go by the miles on your car to tell you what it "needs" F*r#stone will tell you that you need brakes, and this and that just due to the miles on your car. try a wal mart oil change if there is one by you. Use the dealership only for WARRANTY REPAIRS! tecks are $75.00 and hour versus $12.00 -$20.00 an hour for a mechanic.

the dealer quotes a higher charge. why don't you try auto shops around your place. ask some friends you can trust if they know any auto shops around that quotes lesser than the dealer.
