The menstrual blood leaks right through, almost as if I am not wearing a tampon at all. Is there anything I can take to lighten the flow of my period?

Birth control pills are often used to make the period less heavy. Talk to your doctor about the birth control pill. For health reason you do not Want to lose a lot of blood and you also want to save your self the embarrassment of having stain on your pants

Some women are just prone to heavy periods, however, you can use 2 tampons simultaneously. Yes, there is ample room. Insert one, then while firmly holding that string, insert the 2nd -- then tie the two strings together. VERY important to change every 4 hours or so to avoid prevalence of Toxic Shock Syndrome.

My classes was once like this too. i actually ended up happening the pill as a fashion to regulate it. I went from changing a tampon each and every 2-3 hours, to now after being on the pill for extremely almost 4 years, basically wearing a panty liner in the process my era. you should go see your gyne. sometimes very heavy flow can be an indication of an abnormality in the uterus or ovary.
in any case, maybe you can use pads along with your tampons just to prevent leaks

This is quite a heavy flow...my first thought is to go to your doctor and explain this to him/her and rule out any underlying conditions causing this type of bleeding.
As a fibroid sufferer (non-cancerous tumors in your uterus), your question sends a red flag to me that you may have this condition as well.

Go see a doctor...they will give you medication and find out why you are bleeding so heavy...trust me..that is the only way to fix it.
