You are physically standing behind your father, but he is standing behind you in support of everything you do. Its another meaning of standing behind (e.g. "Supporting")

You could be standing behind a picture of your father and another picture of your father is beind you.

-or-
There are two statues of your father and you are standing between them, so technically you are standing behind your father and your father is standing behind you.

Poke your head out from behind your father while he is in the front of you, making a part of you in front of your father while you are behind him.
