I only use charcoal grill. When we fire the pit up, I take a onion and cut it in half then when the grill is hot and the gunk burns off, I rub the onion over the grill----clean and leaves a nice flavor for your meat.Toss the extra onto the coals...Good.(don't get burned use a long fork to hold the onion when you clean the grill)I always thought the chemicals were out of order for the grill.

Oven Cleaner, heat the grill up, shut off, then spray with oven cleaner. Exactly what it's designed to do, clean grease, crud and carbon. Scrape and brush off, then fire up the grill to burn off any chemical residue before cooking. You'll be pleased. I would use a putty knife to clean up the heaviest amount of crud that is loose before using it. That way it can penetrate. You'll be pleased.

Its best not to use chemical on the grill. Just fire up the grill, let the racks get hot, then use a stiff wire brush and scrub. Works well

Call me "old school" but I've only cleaned my grill one way.
After your done cooking on it, crank the gas up all the way or, if you use charcoal, get some fairly green wood and pile it on as much as will fit. Open the bottom vents on your bbq and let it get as hot as you can. If you're doing it right, the grill should begin to glow red and smoke like the Dickens! Once it stops smoking, wipe it down with aluminum foil (careful! It's really hot!!!!)
Let cool and you're good to go.

I just use a wire brush, available from the hardware section or you could use a BBQ brush to clean it before use. Washing it with soap everytime will make it stick to foods that you are BBQing, like seasoning a cast iron pan. It is best to just clean it with the brush after heating the grill.

...just use some alluminum foil (crunched up into a ball) to scrub with and make a mixture of dish soap and hot water....and it will come right off....this also works on pots and pans in your house....
