Loose cloths will increase the friction with water and also with loose cloths might hinder your swimming action.

it helps with the aerodynamics. You go faster in the water because there is less drag with tight fitting swimwear. This is the same reason many men shave their bodies for swimming, and why women wear swimcaps.

Yes. Both of my kids swam competitively for years and the girls wear tight 1 piece competition style suits and guys wear Speedo type brief suits. It all comes down to drag in the water and the tighter the fit of the suit, the less drag. Everyone wears caps to keep their hair from flowing out in the pool. Guys that don't wear the caps, usually have a 'baldy' hair cut ... shaved or nearly shaved head. Serious male swimmers also shave all their body hair ... again to cut down on the drag in the water when racing.

I know girls who have somehow gotten themselves into bathing suits three sizes too small.

It depends what you are swimming. If you are a recreational high school/summer swimmer, you probably can get away with not shoving your body into something that it isnt meant for.

Swimming in higher level swim meets, you might want to. Or get fast skin.

If it's loose the water would go in to the swim wear then it will become heavy and might push you down the opposit dirrection.

Wow, I didn't know after all these years the guys wore swim suits under their uniforms. No wonder Rickey Henderson had that dynamic speed and wore it for aerodynamic control..
