Can I use my DVD drive or an external DVD player to capture video for Moviemaker?

I would like to make and edit movies using SHOWBIZ or Windows MOVIEMAKER. I have had limited success using Adaptec hardware to capture analog from a VCR to Showbiz but it has a lot of problems. Does anyone know If I can use my computer's DVD player or an external DVD player to capture video to Moviemaker or Showbiz? I have 8MM video I would like to make into DVD movies and add special effects. I can transfer the 8 MM to a DVD first and was wondering if I could then put it in my computer's DVD player and then capture it.

You need a DVD Burner. A player will not work.
