A cable/DSL router allows you to plug in your high speed internet connection. A router allows you to communicate with different networks. You do this through your internet provider when using the internet. However if you were to have 2 computers in your with 2 different network addresses, you would need a router for those computers to communicate. This all gets very complicated, I could explain this in greater detail but I would only succeed in confusing most people anyway.

As for the 4 ports this allows you to connect up to 4 network devices, to communicate through Ethernet. For example: 2 computers, a network printer, and a file server could all be connected to each other and a single internet connection.

its a router that can be used with either DSL Internet service or Cable such as Roadrunner. this box routes the packets of information over the Internet and back into your computer. the router just sends information to and fro and it also encrypts or decrypts the information when needed.
