Some people certainly think so. The problem is finding out how to pay for it, and to do it without penalizing the private system of health care and penalizing those who can and do pay for their medical care.
It raises the larger question of what IS the responsibility of the federal government, the state and local governments, and other agencies. Many believe that it is a mistake to give the government too much power, because once that power is taken from the people, it is almost impossible to ever get it back. The fear is that one day the government will have so much power it will be able to take and to do anything it wants, and private citizens will no longer have a voice.
This is called a dictatorship, and the Founding Fathers worked hard to build protections into the Constitution to guard against precisely that taking place. It is something we need to be very aware of and very cautious about.

No. I work hard and pay too much in tax money. Why should the hard-working always subsidize the lazy? If the individual is mentally impaired, I do not mind to help but if it is someone who decides to not work, be a criminal, or just rely on the government, I do not want to deny my family more than I already must just so they can benefit.
I say keep the money sent to other countries and refund it to the people who pay taxes -- not the liberal earned income credits or vouchers or any other redistribution program but give it back to the ones it really belongs to.

Poor people have access to health care through free clinics etc. Many of the lower middle class do not. Many people who have a choice would rather spend the money on cable TV, cell phones, new car etc. When Hillary tried to have her health care plan shoved down our throats, it would have cost an average tax payer $800 more per month in taxes. I am not willing to pay that much money.

Social programs like Welfare are nothing more than reconstituted slavery. It strips people of their dignity, their minds and their will to succeed. Why fight for it when you can just sit back and have it given to you? It underminds the very nature of capitalism. Why strive to do better and get ahead if the government is just going to take it away from you and then give it to the lazy? As a physician, why bother to do your very best when regardless of your efforts, all you will be given for your labor is the same thing the slug who graduated deadlast in the class is going to get regardless of the number of mistakes he's made that you would never make? Just the kind of care I want in my senior years... Thanks, I'll do it the old fashioned way. EARN IT!

If you think our government is in debt now, wait until
they'd have to pay for everyone's health care....they
couldn't possibly pay the price. Besides, we don't want
government as our "Big Daddy". Let's take care of our
own needs (including insurance). Some hospitals now
absorb the costs of those who simply have no insurance
and cannot pay, so no one is turned away from care.
Go to Canada and see if you like their health care programs....
they stand in lines for hours and hours and that is why
many of their citizens come to the USA for operations.

You know i really resent people on here who think just cause you have no health insurance you dont work. I work 45 hours every week but no insurance is offered at my job so I have to pay every bit of hospitalization my last trip to ER cost me 8k. Its not fair that I have to pay so much when you all you have to do is pay for the insurance. I would gladly pay for insurance if I could.

No, because health care is not a proper function of government. I think that you need to go live in a socialist paradise like Cuba or China. They have free health care.

In the first place nobody dies in this country because of lack of health care. If you have a documented case where a medical facility let someone die because of money then I suggest you put up or shut up. Give me a name of someone who died because of money. If you have no money and have a disease the state where you live has coverage for you. Show me the evidence or shut up.

Only if I don't have to pay for it. I won't use government health care, so I don't want my tax dollars going towards it. It is bad enough I already help pay for services I will never use.

yes, some of us fall between the cracks and make
just maybe 2- 3dollars over the limit for state or
federally assisted programs, all 'americans' should
have access to health care, some billionaires'
should kick in too, I Understand Bill Gates has set
up a health clinic in Africa, all well and good, but
how about something similar here in the states?
