A lot of money, the profit margin on food service is pretty low and the initial and longterm investments can be pretty hefty. It all depends on what you want to start...a large sitdown restaurant is of course going to cost a lot more than a carry out and delivery pizza shop or something. It also depends on the area which you are in when dealing with property costs and taxes.

You most likely won't spend a million dollars to open one, but you could.
