Yes.

The world has evolved into such a place where people feel as though they have the right to say "screw the world" and act in any way they choose.
It's like they see the world's suffering and poverty and war and the list could continue... but they see it and it's not compassion that surfaces, but a hardened heart.
It's like they feel the world is already screwed up so they have the right to be complete bastards to anyone and everyone.

It's wierd how it works.

People bring up free will and how they can exercise it any way they choose. But they ignore the act of being 'humane'.

It drives me nuts.

It's like... being mean has become okay.

And i find that so incomprehensible and ridiculous.

Respect... this world needs respect.

But i suppose you could just say the world needs a little more peace, love and understanding.

One will find meanness wherever we go, but try to realize it doesn't take much effort to be mean. I am not a mean person in nature, just a bit too honest and sincere- it takes a lot more effort to be kind.. I find it cruel when meanness predominates when it shouldn't, but that's a part of human nature that we as individuals face everyday and trying to make a challenge less hectic is hard, no matter who we are. Tragedy is, where do we place the blame for this behavior?- is it inward or social, like you stated?...

Very good question on your part. I thank you for reading my answer and.. happy new year to you!

Great topic!
For me, it will never be socially acceptable for people to be mean. However, in today's society, it is not only "in style", (I use that term wisely), to be mean, but also to be rude, obnoxious, and self-centered.

When was the last time someone in a crowded store bumped into you, and apologized? Or how about when you are courteous to allow a driver to pull out in front of you to exit, for example, a gas station, and they don't even wave to say "thanks"? And then there are the idiots on their cell phones, (one of my biggest pet peeves), who find it acceptable to use profanity in public while on their phones, stand in aisles in stores and chat about absolutely useless blabber, and then give you a dirty look and be MEAN when you have to say "excuse me", just to get by.

Yes, today is a very different world than the way I grew up and was raised. I am so polite that it annoys my boss when I thank him more than once for lunch. I usually sit in my parked car to use my cell phone because I don't know about you, but I get embarrassed when my cell phone rings in public and I have to answer it. I just recently got a company phone and my boss has requested I keep it on during work hours. I am used to turning off my phone while at work, because in my world, that used to be considered socially proper, in line with saying "thank you", "you're welcome", and a gesture of a hand wave to say "thanks" when a driver on the road is courteous to you.

I hope this New Year brings a new awareness and appreciation for life for all the world to see.

I sure hope not though at times it seems that way it is very annoying. We all deal with enough negative energy with our jobs etc. i come to here for stress relief but anymore this gives me the most stress as there are so many questions you just don't want to answer due to content and then if you ask like this one you get a bunch of mean remarks instead of decent ones. hang in there hon there are a lot of us that do not like being mean here bless you

Its sad, but I believe it's true. people just laugh it off and say things like "she don't take crap from anyone" people now-a-days seem to encourage this behavior now. I worked in a place where people where extremley rude, mean and hurtful with their comments. I gave my two weeks notice because of the enviroment, I began to act the same way not only to co-workers, but to my own family!!!
So be nice everybody!!!!! No matter what you should know better than stoop to this.

In my opinion it has become more socially acceptable to be selfish, which in many cases can be represented in a mean way.

Not socially acceptable, but much more the norm. No one has to deal with consequences, as in the past. Before, you mouthed off, or were mean, your mom or dad would wallop you one. Now, no one pays any attention, except the victim. And they're called names if it hurts their feelings.

It has become more socially acceptable for people to refuse to take responsibility for their actions. Meaness follows as they try to make excuses for their shortcomings.

Sadly, it's starting to look like it's not only socially acceptable, but socially preferred.

I work with the public, and I believe that it is. The longer I work there it seems that the worse people's manners get, it's like they have no respect for other people, not only towards me, but towards others as well.
