In football, since this is what section your question was asked, they are 1-A Independents; however, Notre Dame, in basketball, volleyball, baseball, cross country, golfing, softball, and swimming and diving they are in the Big East; in hockey, Central Collegiate Hockey Association

They belong to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association in hockey and the Big East in all other sports but fooball, where they are an independent.

In NCAA Football, they belong to the Independents I-A league.

The Big-Ten, then the conference would have to change it's name I guess. Even right now the conference has 11 teams.

Last I heard they were still unaffiliated with any conference.

They talked about joining the ACC a few years ago, but as far as I know they never did.
