Fireworks are made with various chemicals packed into containers that allow them to burn at specific rates and at various ignition times. Powdered aluminum or magnesium, for example, gives a bright white light while copper is used for green. They are launched from mortar tubes and are timed to detonate at a preset height above the ground. The fireworks you buy for your backyard are made with the same chemicals for different colors.

Fireworks are generally made of packaging (some kind of cardboard), a mechanical mixture of fuel and oxidizer (similar in function to gunpowder), a binder (paste to hold the chemicals together), and some metallic substance that burns brightly and a characteristic color (aluminum for white, calcium for orange, strontium for red, barium for green, potassium for purple, etc).
