The history is stored in a file called desktop.ini. This file is simply deleted when you clean the history.

The history of where you went is also store in a file called index.dat, though that information isn't organized by date like the history is. I believe that index.dat is used to help complete web addresses if you type them in.

I use privacyMantra from

http://www.codeode.com/privacymantra/index.html

It seems to do a good job deleting both files. It is free. Though I don't recommend "mil shield" for getting rid of index.dat files because it costs money and privacyMantra is free, the mil shield site has a very good explanation of why index.dat is a security hole.

privacyMantra and most of the other tools (like ccleaner) don't put the files in the recycle-bin but really delete them. Unfortunately simply deleting doesn't get rid of the information in the files. You can use tools to un-delete files. To get rid of the information, I use eraser http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/ to erase all the free space on the disk. This overwrites the free space multiple times with random values. This overwriting gets rid of all the data. Eraser also overwrites the unused file pointers. You can set up eraser to wipe out the internet tracks, but it is a pain to do so.
