The most important thing is to know your legal rights and the policies of your company. If you live in the U.S. your legal rights can be found at www.dol.gov (department of labor site).

You shouldn't expect to be taken advantage of, but you should establish healthy boundaries with your boss and co-workers. Start with your job description, what is it and is that what you are doing? Establish clear expectations with your supervisor, and if he or she is asking you to do more than what is described, you should ask for an update and perhaps and upgrade of the job.

Best advice, do your job, meet or exceed expecations, and communicate frequently. If you feel someone is taking advantage of you, confront the situations professionally.

Try to do you best on your job. Help others when they need help. Do a little bit more to help others does not necessary mean that you are being taking advantage of. If you help others at work, others will help you as well. Create a team spirit. Don't try to be over protective. Otherwise, you could be isolated.

Make sure that a list of duties was given to you when you started. If not, ask for one. If you are asked to do something that is not on the list, ask whether if is a one time job or not. If is an addition to your list of duties, determine how much time it takes and bring that up. Make sure you are not working OT to get the job done when others are not busy for 8 hours. Make sure to document everything.
