i'm not trying to get into a dem V rep, or a Lib B con thing here, so please, neither side of the coin worry about that.

this question is for the republicans out there that voted for GW the first time he ran. at the time (not now, not looking at the other options that have come up since) did you feel that George Bush was the best republican option at the time? was there anyone else that you'd have rather seen running for president in the republican spot?

George W was the best man at the time. He is much better than Gore or Kerry and was the best republican available.

Bush was the best Republican in 2004 much the way Clinton was the best Democrat in 1996. The President is running for reelection. It was a reelection year. Nobody else from the same party should ever run in a reelection year because it denotes that the party is falling apart and the political party, Republican or Democrat does not have faith in their own leadership. In 2004, Bush was the only Republican who could win election, and he did. He was elected by more than 50% of the vote which is the first landslide election since his father was elected in 1988. Clinton was elected with 43% of the vote in 1992 and 47% of the vote in 1996, so he may have been Mr. Hollywood as far as the press was concerned, but both times most of the country did not want him in office.

I very strongly, as an accountant and as an economist supported the Bush tax cuts, and he has been consistently proven correct to cut taxes in a time of severe recession. Yes, it caused deficits, but there is now more money, not less, flowing into the coffers of the Treasury and the deficit is coming down.

I also voted for Bush on his stance on the War on Terror. I believe it is exactly his leadership of the prior four years that has kept America safe from attack on her own soil. Many Republicans echoed his sentiments and he engineered bipartisan support from both Democrats and Republicans to invade our enemies. In 2004, there is no better Republican for President than George Walker Bush.

A question for you: Was Kerry the best the Democrats could do?

My strong preference early in 2000 was Sen. Orrin Hatch. After he dropped out, I was leaning toward Sen. McCain. Then McCain started behaving as if the best way to win the Republican Party's nomination was to get more Democrats than Republicans to vote for him in the Republican primaries, a strategy which alienated me, so next I finally "settled" (with a strong sense of disappointment) on Bush.

I would have preferred McCain, and probably others as well.
I considered Bush to be better than the Democratic nominee each time he ran, but not the best man in the country to be President.

Well hard to compare since Huckabee hasn't (and hopefully never will become) President, but Bush has sent 3800+ soldiers to their deaths in Iraq on his own little religious crusade against the infidels, so I guess he's got more zealous points on his hide.

Honestly i just started to get into politics at that time, I just wanted to get a Republican in office. There is times I wish I didn't just vote for the party at that time, now I do research before I decide. Overall I think President Bush is doing a good job.

I'm too young to answer about the past. I'd like to see Tim Pawlenty (Governor of Minnesota) get the Repub ticket in 2008 though.

I've quit the party.

McCain was the better choice. I've been disappointed that he's largely caved in to the neo con agenda... and no longer know if I'd vote for him.. but he would have been a better choice.

I think George W Bush is a complete and total idiot, but at least he's better than Gore, Kerry, Edwards, or Hillary
