It basically means that offspring will generally behave in the same manner as their parents. Hence the analogy, the fruit (the offspring) will not deviate far from the tree (their parents) in behavior, ideas, etc...

It is really supposed to be the apple never falls far from the tree, but yes it means what the two previous people said

it is actually--an apple never falls FAR from the tree--meaning-whatever you are taught or whoever you are taught by--you will be similar to if not the same as them--for instance you will probably grow up and turn out like your mother or father--it is usually used as a derogatory term,meaning he's just like his father(no good)
