I have a pair of denim shorts; I think they're called cargo or something. They have camoflage design and pockets all over. Oh, by the way, these are mens shorts. They're about knee length. I can't find any in the stores this time of year so I was wondering is there a way to do some cutting and sewing to reduce the waist size from 34 to 32? I know how to sew and know some people who could help me. I just don't know if it's doable or if I should just wait til spring and by another pair.

OK I am a sewer if your talking just two inch's I would take out of the but area not the side seam (Just to much to pick out) Just pick the seam with a seam ripper I am thinking this is an overlapped seam.If its an overlapped seam being careful not to cut the fabric where it folds overlapped

When you get it completely undone just cut it off where you see its folded and bent

-------------------- I I v pocket
back seam---> I I <-----------cut off seam here that much and about 1/4 inch more each side then refold and resew
If I can teach my son how to do this you can do it too. Just watch closely when you take it apart.

If its a just straight seam Its even easier Just take seam apart with seam ripper (cut off the old seam) then one inch on each side fold and re-sew just make sure to sew evenly

You will have to cut though the waist band and re-sew straight
If it happens to have back loops make sure you don't cut though them that you pick them off and re-attach just like you took them off.So watch how you took them off.

Yes, it's doable. There's a seam up the back that can be opened up with a seam ripper (a seam ripper is a sewing tool that snags and cuts the thread). Start on the inside of the shorts. (You can use a razor blade, but that can easily cut the fabric as well as the thread) You might also have to rip the seam of the inside waistband in order to open the seam completely. Once you have the seam open, you can sew a new seam to make the pants smaller--probably just a half-inch on each side--1 inch total--maybe you can make the seam a little bigger, but if you take them in too much the pockets in the back will be too close together. You'll need a sewing machine to stitch the new seam and you'll have to hand stitch the waistband back in place. Before that, trim off the excess material and press open the seam with an iron. It's really easier to take them to a dry cleaners that offers tailoring services, though it's a way to kill some time and you'll feel proud of yourself if you are successful. Congrats on sizing down.

A tailor or someone who does alterations can do this...but 2 whole inches is quite a bit.

I did notice the day after Christmas THE GAP already had some cargo shorts out, so maybe go there and just buy some new shorts.

Yes, it is very possible but difficult. You would need a sewing machine. You would need to take the waist band off--at least to the side seams--then sew some of the side seam to decrease size, then sew the waist band back on. Woops, the waist band would be too long. A professonial may be able to do it. Don't know. Sorry.

Someone who is skilled in sewing could take them in at the side seams. OR, if it is a style that would look okay, can add a pleat in each side of the front, and make the waistband smaller. It would be a lot of effort to me though. Spring styles will be out really soon.

Seek out a good quality tailor or suit maker and he can reduce the size for you. I know because I have done the same thing.

Depending on how much you have to reduce them, and where the pockets are, you should be able to take them in. Most tailors could do it for you.
