I know it has a lot to do with what type of oboe you have, but are there other ways besides a different oboe or reed?

It takes practice.

Try doing vocal warm-ups before you begin so that your throat will be round and open. Yawn several times.

If you're using a plastic oboe, it will never sound as mellow as a wooden one, but a rounder throat and air supply will help.
