Make sure they look good. Nobody wants to give it there all if they don't look good. Pump them up with something new -- shoes, sweatshirts, something.....get parents involved. If kids know they have someone who cares, they'll put more heart into it. Make a big deal at school about the team...announcements, rallies, etc....My son is on the JV team, but played with the Varsity this week in a tournament. The varsity guys were so excited that me and my family were there every day of the 4 day tournament. They just need to know people care about what they care about!

Start practice out with music... something motivational. Have the individuals on the team write out what they want to accomplish as a team then talk about it as a group. Write down your vision of the year and work towards making it true... it helps if you have a saying, motto, and/or team song. Put together a montage of different inspirational movie clips (Hoosiers, Rocky IV when he trains, etc. etc.). Have a bunch of situational drills (you're down by 2 points, you have 10 seconds left, time to win, etc).
Hopefully this helps...
Let me know.

ok run drills 24/7 to keep the up, scout a team, a very easy team and let your varsity team kill them say on the school ground
now do your best to scout the hardest team you can possibly find, and let your team vs them. They will not just get better but will have confidence to beat them in a rematch IF they win this, scoute a harder team

This may sound kind of cliche but watch either Remember the Titans )even though it was a football movie) and/ or Glory Road or Coach Carter. They were really good motivation movies.
