A real conservative favors tradition, small government, low taxes, a strong military that is only used in times of desperate need, personal responsbility and low government involvment in peoples lives.

Today the meaning has been quite twisted by the neo-cons and globalists that have taken of the republican party.

Goldwater would be a liberal in todays political climate.
