If you two are room mates, why aren't you speaking up about being cold?? Unless they pay the entire heat bill, you have a say here and it isn't exclusively up to them. I would demand a compromise of at least 68*. If they refuse to compromise, I would find a new place or a new room mate before I would be uncomfortable in my own home. If they are unwilling to think of your comfort also they are awfully selfish.

We keep our thermostat set at 65* but use a pellet stove for main heat. If the pellet stove were out of commission, the thermostat would be set at 68-70* depending on the temp outside.

Good Luck.

The absolute optimum temp for the Winter months is 68 during the day and dropped to 64 at night (after bedtime)
And, 76 during the Summer months during the day and around 80 during the evening (after bedtime) with a small fan on you at bedside
At these settings you will experience the best of both worlds-- comfort levels that do keep you within "the zone" and energy bills that you can actually Live with !!!
This is from a study done some time back at M I T when the energy crunch began to take a major role within the American budget !!!

I replaced my traditional thermostat with a digital one that makes it easy to change the setting and to see what it keeps the house at. I fooled around with it this winter and found a few interesting numbers.

If you set it at 68 or below you are going to be cold unless you bundle up and wear gloves indoors.
If you set it at 69 it is OK for night time when you are under the covers but is borderline uncomfortable if you are sitting around.
If you set it to 70 you can be comfortable in normal clothes.
If you set it to 71 or above you can be overheated at times and you will waste a lot of fuel.

64 would be too cold for most people, also the thermostat could have a dead band in it and it could go down as low as 60 maybe before it turns heat on or up as high as 70 before it turns off. You could get you a good digital thermometer and check the temp (at the thermostat) where it turns heat on and where it turns of could be a new thermostat could save you both money and you would both be more comfortable say at 68 degrees.

We have a large house and set our thermostat at 65. Certain areas of the house (upstairs rooms with more windows) are colder than the rooms downstairs. Our monthly winter heating bills have run about $150.00 or a little more at that setting. We just wear warm clothing inside the house (long sleeves sometimes layered & long pants) unless someone is sick then we will push the thermostat up a little and pay the higher heating bill.

We're used to it. When we sit to watch TV, I wrap myself in a blanket, head to feet.

In the winter, you can keep your home at 70 deg F for comfort, although if you keep it colder you'll save lots of heating dollars. The amount of heating/cooling effort expended is directly related to the difference between the outside temperature and your thermostat setting.
Similarly, air conditioning set at 80 deg F in the summer makes it comfortable in a home, although many people set their thermostats much lower.

During the day we keep ours at 72 but we have a digital thermostat and we programed it to 68 it changes after I'm asleep and changes back before I wake. I say make a compromise with your roommate. You live there too and you should be comfortable as well.

I live in an all electric house. Before I had a family I kept my temp set at 55 (any lower and some outside faucets would freeze) to save money.. I just wore a lot of sweatshirts and insulated shirts in the house... (electric bill was about $23 / month)

With kids.. I keep it set at 74 or 75 and cringe when I see the electric bill (electric bill about $180 / month unless it gets really cold outside)

We keep ours at 66-68. Get an electric heater for your room, and pick up a couple of warm sweaters otherwise. 64 is a bit cold.
