Well that depends on what type of makeup you want to do. If you want to do beauty only or special effects too. Also what types of makeup you need will depend on what field you are going into. For weddings and makeovers you will need lighter foundations and colors. If it is for tv, movies and photography you will want to have heavier foundations and more brilliant colors available.
Here is a basic list of what I can't live without in my kit. The numbers of colors are how many I feel is needed to have a wide enough range to cover different skin tones.
Beauty Kit:
Good set of brushes
foam wedges
disposable mascara wands
q tips
cotton balls
eye pencil sharpener
makeup remover
eyelash curler
saline eye rinse
translucent face powder
foundation in a wide range of colors as you can. At least 10 shades.(type depends on field)
concealer wheel
lip palette with 6 shades
lip pencils in coordinating shades to lip palette
eye palette with 10 shades
blush 5 shades
eyeliner black, brown, taupe, gray
mascara black, brown, clear
Special Effects Kit
liquid latex
prosthetic adhesive
spirit gum
spirit gum remover
brush set
makeup remover
liquid blood
thick blood
flesh palette
misc color palette
burn wheel
bruise wheel
injury wheel
misc. creme pot liners
knox gelatin
food coloring
popsicle sticks
scissors
coffee
dixie cups
foam wedges
q tips
wet wipes
alcohol
derma wax
pencil sharpener
foundations in misc colors
stipple sponges
Having a wide selection of colors is always a plus. If you don't have the right colors for your clients then your work will look bad regardless of skill.
Tip: If you do not have one already the first thing you want to do is create a portfolio. Get friends together and do makeovers on people with various hair and skin colors. If your into FX then practice different things like old age and injury simulation. Take lots of good clear pictures. Put these in a book so you will have to show people your work.
Good Luck!

I think this is an awsome carreer too put i want to focus on deisigning. But micabella has a stand in my mall and me and my friend bought one lil thing each. It was pricey but it was her first makeup over $7. And the cool thing with their makeup is it's a powder and you can make it anything you want. (eyeshadow/liner, mascara, nail polish, lip gloss, ect.) They have a make up artist kit and it is huge but its like $1000. You can also go on their site and look at their franchise opportunity.
Hope this helps.

I think a really
good natural, mild cleanser and a slight exfoliant (I use baking soda, it is great)
Make-up remover or a natural lotion or baby oil,
cotton balls, disposable make-up sponges
disposable application Q-tips for eye shadow- on side is pointed and the other flat,
different moisturizer lotions for different skin types
White, soft and clean wash clothes.
Shades of Foundations, for many skin colors
Mixing containers (small paper cups) to custom make/mix foundation colors.
Good loose powder in all the skin tone colors
Spectrum of lipsticks, lip pencils
Array of eyeshadow colors.
"Stay-put" to use under the eyeshadow, makes the make-up stay on longer
Shades of mascara, with disposable applicators for the eye lashes
Mustache wax - it keeps the eyebrows in place after you brush them.
I don't care for it, but shades of concealer for blemishes
That's all I can think of for now.
