This was used in the 1969 movie Easy Rider, a counterculture classic starring Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda as bikers who ride from Los Angeles to New Orleans. Another Steppenwolf song, "The Pusher," was also used in the film.

As everyone so far has mentioned, the artist is Steppenwolf's "Born to Be Wild".
As seen in the movie, Easy Rider with Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson, it's widely regarded as being the source for the name of the genre Heavy Metal, with the Born to be Wild lyric "heavy metal thunder".
