YES.
We've had our microwave next to the fridge for 20 years, and except for a healthy green glow at night, it hasn't affected our health or harmed the appliances!

My microwave is in a built in cabinet but it is beside the refrigerator.
I have never had a problem with it & my husband has been in the kitchen business for over 30 yrs, so I think you will be okay.

It is safe, unless you are obsessed with heating and eating, then it ought to be across the room from the fridge, so you will get some exercise, between meals.

There is no reason that the two cannot be side by side. The only problem is connecting them to the same circuit. They should be connected to individual circuits or the breaker will trip from overload.
