I kinda didn't understand it either until i read the plot online...the thing you have to understand is that the characters Rose (mom) and Sharon (daughter) wake up from the crash in a dark foggy world with ash which is a limbo world (which the evil girl Alessa controls) and they are stuck in parallel realities from everyone else...
for more of the plot read from this link:

You don't necessarily have to play the game to understand the movie, but it would definitely get you used to the complexity of the story. The "Cliffs Notes" version of the story: It's about a young girl who was harrassed, tortured and nearly killed for being different (she had no father, which in a fanatically religious community such as theirs, causes a person to be cruelly tormented and ostracized). The cult nearly killing her was the absolute last straw, causing her to eventually exact her much deserved revenge.
But if it's the ending that's confusing you, contrary to popular belief, the mother and daughter are not dead. They're still trapped in Alessa's alternate dimension. Here's what happened...
There are three parts of Alessa:
- Alessa (the original body)
- Good Alessa (Sharon)
- Dark Alessa ("The Demon")
Sharon and Dark Alessa are basically physical manifestations of the two sides of Alessa - the good side and the evil side. As for how Alessa created these physical manifestations (and the alternate dimensions), it can only be assumed that she possessed some kind of supernatural power (possibly telekinetic and/or psionic powers, which would obviously lead everyone associated with the cult to call her a witch). Assuming this is true, the ending goes as follows:
1) Dark Alessa (aka - "The Demon") does not, in fact, take over or possess Sharon. Dark Alessa simply recombines with Good Alessa (Sharon), creating a new "reincarnated" Alessa.
2) Alessa's deal with her evil counterpart is not simply that she will help her exact her revenge, but that she will also be granted a new life with a better mother: Rose.
3) In this case, you can look at the ending in one of two ways:
a.) Alessa's plan works and she gets a second chance at life and is granted a new mother in Rose. However, because Alessa was motivated by hate and revenge and let her evil side take over (as well as Rose's part in the revenge), Rose and Sharon (Alessa #2) are doomed to live in the purgatory-like realm that Dark Alessa created. Therefore, no one really wins.
or
b.) Alessa's plan works and she gets a second chance at life and is granted a new mother in Rose. Now with Sharon's memories to work with after reuniting with her, Alessa can extend her sphere of influence and create a world just like the one Sharon and Rose lived in, where they can stay forever. In other words, Alessa doesn't want Rose to leave her alternate dimension; she wants to keep Rose all to herself.
Hope this helps. :)

i finished the original silent hill video game and they had different endings depending on how you played out certain scenes. there was a bad ending, where harry mason (the main character) is unconscious on his steering wheel, implying he dreamed of the whole thing before dying. another scenario has mason, cybil the cop, and his baby daughter escaping the underworld..
so you can interpret the movie in different ways.. parallel universe maybe. i think mom, daughter, and cybil died from the start. cybil's in heaven for her selfless efforts. as for the other two, they should be in hell (since mom made a pact with the demon alessa), but connection to reality is so strong that instead they are trapped in limbo.

silent movies r about really watching the characters nad the movie itself and try to understand without sound eg.watching a mime. you basically try to understand what the mime is trying to tell u without telling u but using body language and facial expressions.
