If our government keeps letting companies outsource our jobs....and importing cheaper labor...where is middle class America going to go...you know the people that support all of our social systems that people take for granted?

Larry---

You do realize when they figure unemployment rates...they do not include those people who have given up...it is only based on those who are collecting unemployment and using government agencies to obtain employment...so those figures are skewed.

Also....when they refer to raises, they do not take into account that someone lost their job making $25 and hour and had to take a job making $12.50....that is a 50% reduction in pay....then when the guy making $12.50 an hour gets a $.50 raise....they only say that he got a raise...not that he took a 50% reduction in pay...then got the $.50 raise...

Those numbers are BS!!!

Servers, waiters, stewards, disposal services, mechanics, computer system techs, the service industry is still wide open, it does really suck thought that quite a few manufacturing jobs are leaving the country. I tend to think that the jobs that will be opening up more in the USA will involve more than just book smarts. Creative minds will have an advantage in the future of this country. Oh I almost forgot, since people are living longer these days, there will be an explosion for job oppurtunities in the nursing field and all that goes into that.

p.s. Enceladus,
Companies downsize (fire people) to stay competitive, they also outsource (move out of the country) to stay competitive. That's the way it goes, sometimes they have foreign companies do certain aspects of their business so they save money, other times they leave before they go bankrupt. Since we have had the free trade agreement with China, they as a country have been the only ones to profit from the deal. People here in the states might pay a lower price for goods, but it really hasn't been worth seeing so many people lose their jobs.

Well take a look around.
The labour department’s report on January 5 is also forecast to show the jobless rate held at 4.5%, close to a five-year low.

Now back when I was in college in the 80's I was taught that the lowest unemployment rate possible was 5%, what with people changing jobs, some people simply not being employable, etc. so 4.5 is pretty fricking low as unemployment rates go.

Payrolls GREW by 109,000 in the fourth quarter. That was the smallest quarterly gain since an average of 18,000 from July through September 2003, but it was still GROWTH, NOT shrinkage.

So the idea of "mass unemployment" in the US because of outsourcing or immigrant labor is a crock, and it only exists in the minds of political propigandists. It simply isn't true.

Well, don't blame the Government, and don't blame business.

It is you, (all of us) that is driving the global economy. Everytime you choose the less expensive imported product over the more expensive locally made product you vote for these changes to happen. Every day you vote with your consumer choices and the market moves accordingly.

Companies only respond to their shareholders (which are you and me again) whom demand the best return on their investments. They do this by minimising costs whilst keeping their customers (that is you again) using their products and/or services.

So, if you want jobs to stop leaving your country you can make a difference. The question is, will you make a difference? And do enough of your fellow 'concerned citizens' care about keeping jobs rather saving a few bucks each time you go shopping?

Many people don't realize that the middle class is a big part of the reason jobs are outsourced. Major stores, like Wal-Mart, demand the companies that supply them to continually lower prices to "benefit the customer," even though this leads companies to lay off employees (those same people who are the retailer customers) and outsource those very same jobs for the people they claim to try to help.

The middle class does not have a chance until people are better informed about their situations.

America has shifted from being a producer to having a service industry. As much as I love America, I know I will not depend on the government for help. Me and my wife have good jobs and instead of buying a BMW or Lexus and buying a big house and have 2.5 kids, we are opting instead to rent, drive our honda and toyotas, delaying having kids for 5 years and make some investments. (Ours is Real Estate). That said, you have to make your own moves because nobody is going to help you.

Learn a trade and go into business for yourself or form a partnership. Physical labor can't be outsourced. Sure immigrants can come in and work cheaply, but if you have your own business, you build up a clientele who will refer others to you. Price is not the only important thing to consumers... customer service, serviceman you can communicate with etc. etc.

Hang in there. The new Democratic Congress will eventually increase the minimum wage. Right now, proportionately, the FEDERAL minimum wage is the lowest it's been since 1955. Some states have already increased their minimum wage on a state by state basis. Also, the Dems will do a better job of addressing health care needs. Things will only get better!

We won't have an economy or
social system in the not to far
off future. Most Americans will
become servants of the filthy rich,
the government and the huge
corporations. In turn we will be
given the basic necessities to
exist. Sound familiar, it should.
It's Communism and it's coming
here. Only wearing a different
mask.

Happy New Year! ‹(°¿°)›

The US Government has nothing to do with these
companies who are down sizing or outsourcing jobs.
This is good business sense and these companies
are looking out for their employees, believe it or not!!!
