Right wing means you are doing the right thing. Left wing means you are so screwed up, you turn left when you should turn right.

The terms right wing and left wing come from the Estates General (the parliament) in France right before the French Revolution in 1789. Those who supported the King (conservatives) and status quo sat on the right of the chamber. Those who supported the populists and poor (liberal/progressives) sat on the left side of the chamber. By the way, the leftists led by Robespierre eventually led the Revolution into a bloody, messy, mistake. Like everything, going to far right or left is a bad thing. Anyway, that's where we get the terms right wing and left wing as we use them today. Though by far, neither American Right Wings nor American Left Wings are as right or left as they are in other countries. Whatever people say, American parties are pretty moderate as compared to those in other countries. Don't listen to what all these other people ramble on about. They're either crazy lefties or crazy righties, so you won't get a straight answer, just wacko hatred for the other side.
