Basic economics shows that raising the minimum wage is a horrible idea.
First off, it is a minimum. Many states have higher minimum wages than the federally mandated one. Second, many companies already pay more in order to stay competitive.
But here's the problem. If a company currently pays people $5.15/hr to produce a product and then charges consumers $7.15 for that product, when the gov't raising the wages to $7.50/hr, the company will have to raise the price of the product accordingly (to $9.50) to pay the salaries and maintain a profit.
Who does that hurt? It hurts the person who is making $8/hour currently. That person will not have any change in their pay and they now can't afford that product because the price went up. This will lead to inflation and small businesses will crumble under the increased expenses that they are not able to support.
The lower class will love it because they will get more money (although prices will go up and there will be no change to their buying potential). The upper class won't care because they will raise the prices to maintain their profits and they won't see any differences. The middle class, whom the Democrats claim to support, will get screwed by increased prices and a declining value of the dollar with no changes in their income.

Since Wendy's offers health insurance to its employees, the minimum wage is $7.25 not $7.50 as you say it is. If an employer does not offer health insurance then the wage is $8.25 The state’s minimum wage of $7.25 per hour will remain the same as it has been since 2009, state Labor Commissioner Thoran Towler announced today. (April 1st, 2013) The minimum wage will be $8.25 an hour for workers not offered medical insurance by their employers. (NOT $8.50 LIKE YOU SAY IT IS) You come on here and you don't even know what the wages are to be complaining about it

It is people like you who keep the rich in poor paying jobs while they take all you earned for them laughing at such suckered like you!
If we didn't have minimum wage you wouldn't be making $10.00 an hour in a block plant, which at that rate you'll never be able to buy a house, buy a new car (Not low end), or even send your kids to school! About $4.00 or more of your money goes to the government!
It is people like you who keep the rich sucking off of your money!
Let me guess, you are 19 and you work 60 hours a week!
Let me know how you live on $10.00 an hour?

A) Because many union contracts are set up that their members get x times the minimum wage, and the unions sold their souls to the Democratic Party (and vica versa) years ago.
B) Because the very small fraction of people who do work at minimum wage jobs are often in groups that vote heavily democratic (students for example).
C) Because it is gives Democrats a cheap way to feel good about themselves. They get to tell themselves that they "really did something to help the poor" but don't actually have to pay the cost. Actually helping the poor yourself means you have to do things like give money, or time, or sometimes both... and hybrid cars are manolo shoes are expensive, and you can meet really icky people at homeless shelters and drug rehab programs...BUT if you use the law to force OTHER PEOPLE to use THEIR money in a way that you think helps the poor... well then you get to feel all virtuious and morally superior AND still have the money to go to the Carribean for a vacation.

Yes, there are a lot of states that already have higher minimum wages than the federal minimum wage. It is just politics. If they do raise it, the people who are making just above minimum wage will be the ones hurt with higher prices.

Maybe your sister and your friend at Wal-mart won't accept jobs that pay less.
So MDonalds and Wal-mart had to offer more to get people to work there.
You found a job that pays 10 bucks an hour.
Employers have figured out what Congress has been ignoring for ten years.
Inflation has made wages lose value bigtime.
Does earning more than minimum wage help YOU?
Yes. So it will help others too.
Think about it.

Minimum wage isn't designed for somebody who has children. If somebody has children and they are making minimum wage they should consider getting an education so they can get a better paying job. So leave it alone.

I was going to tell you it has just gone up to $7.80, but I forgot that that is because I live in Oregon, where more people in charge are sane.
It is NOT possible for a single person on the current minimum wage to afford housing. That being the case, the $5.15 that is the federal minimum is essentially a joke - work 40 hours a week while living on the streets? How long would someone keep their job if their manager found out about that?
It doesn't matter if I know someone who makes minimum wage or not. This issue is not about helping people I know, or only about caring about people I know. This is about fairness and survivability for everyone, whether I know them or not.
As for business owners (usually large chains with billions of dollars in profits) who whine about how they will go out of business if the minimum waged goes up, well, LET THEM. If they are so poverty striken and financially inept that they cannot make a decent profit off their businesses without cheating their workers and forcing them to live in grinding poverty, then they need to make way for businesses that can. Bet you not a single one actually will go out of business. Want to know why not?
Any business that can make money for itself can afford to pay it's workers a minimum wage that is livable, and if they say they can't they are lying, plain and simple. It's not that they CAN'T pay it, they just DON'T WANT TO, and there's a difference.
They don't want to pay it the same way companies like Nike don't want to pay sweatshop workers in China more than one dollar a day, and they are just as capable of surviving a hike in the minimum wage here as they would be able to survive if people started to insist on proper conditions there.
No one really believes that companies like Nike are going to go out of business if it gives it's sweatshop workers more than one dollar a day, and no one should believe any business that says it will go out of business from paying a fair minimum wage here.
Simple as that.

I live in Michigan, The unemployment rate is much higher and the auto companys are laying off 10's of thousands. People who have kids and bills to pay. you can make fun of $7.50 an hour but when your baby is hungry and crying, that $7.50 may just feed him.

... well... you know...there are other parts of the U.S. other than the one you live in...
why do Republicans only think of themselves in almost every situation?
there is a big America out there... maybe you should try and see it... it would answer a lot of your questions and you probably wouldn't be a Republican any more when you actually met people outside your tiny bubblethat
and any inflation would be very small, relative to the number of people on minimum wage...
