It adds, I think, some acidity to the soil. All plants don't respond to this, but some do. Same thing with egg shells - they add alkaline to the soil, but only some plants will benefit from that. Best to get a gardening manual and read up on it, I would think.

This is an easy one.....The coffee grounds keep away bugs and small animals that like to eat on the plants....giving the plants less stress to grow to their fullest.....eggshells around the base of your tomato and pepper plants will add nutrients to the soil as they decompose to feed the fruit of the plants.

Along with the nutrient boost it also keeps slugs away which can nibble at the plants and virtually strip them of their foliage.

Haven't heard of it for vegetable gardening, but it's supposed to be excellent for rose gardens.
