Probably because you can find just about anything on there. Old music videos, tv shows, etc.

There are tons of different videos of all sorts of things. IF you want a good laugh you can watch some idiots falling off their skateboards or some funny pranks people taped. If you missed a good segment on the news last night....its most likely there. If you want to see some clips of a new movie that is comming out or a video game...you can find it there.
What makes it so popular though is the fact that ANYONE can upload anything they want (copyrighted material is obviously a different story) If you just want to record a video message to a friend, you can put it on youtube and they can easily access it in a matter of seconds. Or if you are an activist that wants to get a message out you can put it on youtube for millions to see. Or if you jsut want to show off how stupid you and some friends can be...well you get the picture =)

The beauty of youtube is that you can go back in time and watch a video that proves your government lied to you. Check all 1,000 videos of 9/11 evidence and you will feel like the most duped and
betrayed person in the world.
