For the first answer, you could take a yardstick, but that is probably cheating. I suggest a man's belt. This is about a yard long.
For the second, I suggest a dime (provided you live in the United States). A dime is about one-and-a-half centimeters long, but it's hard to get really close to a centimeter with a common object.

Find a scrap of cloth that is of that length and cut it to the exact length and say about an inch wide. that would be very light and easy to pack to school. You could do the same for the centimeter piece also. Try to get cloth that does not stretch so that you can keep the original measurement

Does anybody know any item that would be light enough to take to school that is 1 yard long?
How about a yardstick? They are pretty light.
