Have a jeweler look at it for you. Most will take a quick look for free.

Look for yourself with a magnifying glass. Most real jewels have small flaws of some sort. It has not flaws it may be artificially manufactured.

Ask the giver if it valuable so that you know if you need to insure it against theft or damage.

First of all, I asume when you say fake, it means glass. Then the answer is simple, look at it in the light, crystal, due to the excess lead in the mixture will sparkle more, it will have, what gemmologists and jewelers call: fire. Normal glass doesn't have this. Just take it between your fingers and move it around in the sun light. Trust me, you can see the difference even if you are not a pro.

lead Crystal is very heavy and noticeable when u pick it up, the piece doesn't seem to be heavier that it looks is suspect, but place it in the sun and look at the prism quality of the piece with a mirror under it and study it for quality, the clasp is sometimes better as the grade of neck less is quality, the core stringing material is better in a piece of better jewelry, things are in that realm to judge
