I remember hearing something about 1963 quarters being different somehow, but can't quite remember the details. I got one in change the other day and it makes a different sound when clinked with other coins. Can anyone jog my memory? Thanks! Betty

Well Betty after doing some searching on google I found that the 1963 Quarter is made out of 90% silver and 10% copper which is what makes it somewhat unique!!! For more info you can go to this site http://www.coinfacts.com/quarter_dollars/washington_quarter_dollars/1963_quarter_dollar.htm

Well hope that helps :D

Pre 1964 Quarters Dimes and Half Dollars and Silver Dollars were all made with silver. In 1964 they were switched to the copper nickel alloy that they use today

Uncirculated Washington quarters struck from 1932-1964 has 90% of pure silver in it (0.1809 troy oz of pure silver). The other 10% is copper.

Quarters made before 1963 contain silver. That's why they are collectable.

It is made of solid silver. If you look at the edge you will see it is all the same color. Compare it to a new quarter and you will see that there is copper in the middle and silver on the outside.

Higher silver content. in 1964, they brought out "sandwich" quarters with a lowered silver content

Actually it's any coin (quarters, halfs, and dimes) dated 1964 or older that are silver.
