Most routers you buy nowadays usually have a built in switch. If it has a WAN (Internet) port and has an additional 4 or 8 ports, you have a switch built in. If this is the type of router you have, her is a good way to go about it...
First you should configure the second router to use a different local IP address. If your first router is using 192.168.1.1 consider using 192.168.2.1 for the second router.
Now connect your modem to your first router's WAN port and connect the second router's WAN port to any of the other ports on the first router.
You should be aware the network on the second router is the more secure network in this configuration. Essentially in this configuration your ISP assigned IP address is translated to 192.168.1.1. Your first router automatically picks an IP it assigns (through DHCP) to the second router. Then that router translates that IP to 192.168.2.1.

Yes you can. The LAN side of the router is basically just a switch anyway. The caveat is that you will need to make sure that the LAN IP address of the router being used as a switch is unique (not the same as any other device on your LAN) as the "router" will still have it's LAN IP address visible on the LAN. Duplicated IP address on the LAN are not allowed. You should go into the settings of this router and set the IP to something unique, but it should still be on the same subnet of your LAN, to keep it simple. This is the only setting you need make to keep everything happy as the router used as a switch will happily do its LAN switch thing regardless of what its WAN is doing, which is nothing in this case.

Why do you have two routers and a switch? Eliminate the 2nd router and the switch.

What are you trying to accomplish?

The second router needs to be assigned a static IP address and subnet mask from the 1st router.

If you are using ethernet, just ignore the separate port on the 2nd router, and connect all the wires on the physically close ports. If you are talking about wireless connection between computer connected to 2nd router then you have to set it that way. (allowing the internet to be able to connect to you)

this is a threat, yet you do not choose dissimilar routers on a community attempting to assign IP's on your instruments. you would be wanting to establish dissimilar switches, not routers. In concept, the relationship could be: ***internet Connection***>>Router>>change>>branch to dissimilar Switches or get admission to factors on your on the spot, dissimilar on the spot router's will conflict if applying dissimilar channels, passwords, and so on. Your Server could be related directly to a change to permit comfortable pass administration around the community. remember that your server could be appearing through fact the DNS, not the router. To play it risk-free you may assign the two the Router and your Server a Static IP handle. each and every room could have this is own get admission to factor in the event that they seem to be far away...however the development that i'm in we've one 3Com get admission to factor for ever 4 rooms that are close to to a minimum of one yet another. attempting to get dissimilar on the spot routers to paintings jointly isn't elementary. yet good success!
