If you would just follow the instructions that came wth your router, or goto the linksys site and download them, it is not hard to setup a router at all.
1st lets start with the requirements for a two computer mixed network with broadband internet.
-A DSL or Cable Internet account (If DSL you need a Username and Password to access your account)
-A DSL or Cable Broadband Modem
-A Wireless Router
-Two Ethernet Cables
-One Wireless Network Adapter or Laptop with built in wireless adapter
Now connect you DSL or Cable modem to the wall and connect the modem to your desktop. Install what ever software you need to get your internet up and running. This is to confirm your internet is working.
Now disconnect the modem from the computer and connect it to the Internet/WAN port on the router and power on the router. And connect a ethernet cable from one of the routers ethernet ports to your computer.
You should have a network conection between the computer and router now
Open a Browser window and type in the following address: 192.168.0.1
This is the routers IP address.
Now your into the routers configuration menues. First we setup the internet connection. If you have a DSL connection you will most likely have a PPPOE internet connection and will have to select that and type in your username and password. If you have a cable internet connection you are most likely using a dynamic ip connection and will only have to select that option.
Save your settings and you should be able to access the internet using your desktop now.
Go back to the router setup pages now. Its time to set it up for wireless. I dont know what model router you have so here are some basic settings.
-DHCP should be on
-Radio should be on
-Channel: Set to 1 or 6 or 11
-SSID: set to what you want. Its the name you want to give your router
-SSID Broadcast: On
Network security (WEP/WAP): Disabled
Save the settings and your router should reboot.
Now either turn on your laptops built in wireless adapter or install the adapter you purchased into your laptop by following the manufacturers instructions and you should have access to the internet on your laptop also.

if you arent extremly concerned with security (wireless isnt secure anyway), disconnect everything that you have done. plug in the modem, wait at least 30 seconds for it to establish a connection with the isp and for your computer to recognize it. disconnect power from the modem, unplug ethernet cable going from the modem the computer, plug that into the internet port on the wireless router. connect power to the wireless router. wait at least 30 seconds for computer to recognize it. connect power to modem. wait at least 30 seconds, connect wired computers to the wired ports on the back of the wireless router.....hopefully you have a wireless router with ports for wired computers....makes it a lot easier. afterwards, if you want to change settings on the router, open up internet explorer or firefox or whatever you use and type 192.168.1.1 the default login/password for linksys is admin/password.

you may upload a instantaneous get entry to point for your DSL router, which should be exceptionally straightforward to confirm. do not leave the settings at default because then your associates or all and sundry driving down the line would have get entry to for your community. So once you're placing it up, that's going to ask you to create a sharekey and then enter it into the web settings of your laptops. i have basically done this once previously, so i am hoping this became any help.

Why don't you call your Internet Service Provider and have them talk you through the process.
