I really have no idea...probably has something to do with how it's a smaller system...a boy...or a 'little' thing compared with the ones you have to hook up to your tv.
Like...two nintendos got married and had a kid?

Mostly, it's all about franchises. It's like TV networks; NBC has different channels that produce different shows, but they still belong to NBC, or MTV or whatever network it may be. The more franchises, The more money they made. The name 'Gameboy' probably was the best marketing idea they had to make sure that the company stay alive in some way or another.
Thing is, Nintendo's financial analysts had the suspicion that the 'Nintendo' franchise would go bankrupt, but the 'Gameboy' franchise would stay alive.
Now that Nintendo has assured it's wealth and power, the Gameboy DS became the Nintendo DS. Gameboy is not a franchise anymore. And therefore, it's all under the same name: Nintendo.
As for the meaning of the words, I have no idea. I don't know Japanese. Further investigation of this question would be favorable for my interests.

The Game boy, was supposed to be a "pal" that you carry around and plays games. Not a very good way to find a name, but became REALLY popular around the world.
Nin-ten-do or 任天å is in Japanese for: "Game Heaven". It started in 1889 and sold hanafuda cards. It soon got more advanced to today's Wii.
