I teach blind kids, and we made fun trivets for Christmas presents this year. Get a bag of grout from Home Depot or Lowes, mix it with water and get the lumps out. Pour it into a mold, (an 8" cake pan is nice) or we used a plastic dinner plate from a picnic set. It has to have firm, consistent sides. Spray the mold with Pam, before pouring in the grout.
Pour the grout into the mold, tap the mold a few times on the table gently to get out any bubbles, then use any thing that catches your fancy for designs in the grout. We used decorator marbles of all colors and shapes, and placed them all through the grout. The grout was white, and the colors were spring time colors of green, yellow and orange and blues.
Between the marbles, we placed brightly colored smaller beads and stars to fill in any blank spots, and then let them sit for a few hours. When it has had time to sit and harden just tip it over and it should slide right out. If not, use the pointed end of a sharp knife carefully in one tiny spot, and it will ease right out.
They are beautiful!! And dirt cheap! A bag of grout is only 10.00, and the bags of marbles is about 1.99. But you can use seashell, pretty rocks, or just anything that you want to use. I have made these with seashells as souvenirs from a trip to the beach, and placed sand around the seashells as a special little extra!
You can use seeds, dried berries, or anything from nature. Buttons, beads, old jewelry pieces--if you have a teenager, let their imagination run! How fun!!
Also, depending on the size of the things you use for molds (you can use little cup cake holders and not fill them full) you can make sets of these for coasters, or use bigger ones for stepping stones outside. The ideas are limitless!
Have fun!
Oh, and another idea that we had in my class is decoupage, and its also REALLY cheap! Get a container of Aleen's decoupage matte or shiny, about 4.99, and cut out some cool pictures of anything your child is interested in. Any magazine, playing cards, Christmas cards, just anything.
Get an old stool, box, or whatever you have lying around (we used some cardboard boxes that I bought at Walmart for fifty cents each, but I also did a bar stool the same way!) and just paint over the picture and it will dry with a great looking sheen and the picture will stay on the box. Very cool looking!

That depends upon your interests, background, and level of expertise. I know of several fun projects that I could do in a day. It also depends the available tools. What do you like to do? Are you interested in wood, metal, math, programming, something else? Let me know. I'll try to help. Electronics can be fun as well. Again, what do you like to do?

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.

If this is for a girl: Fun and easy. Any craft store will have "raw" keepsake boxes. Acrylic paint, glitter, "gems" , felt for lining etc. approx. $10
If this is for a boy: Again, a craft store will have models of cars, planes, etc. and the paint to finish them. Also they all have a level of difficulty, so you may choose accordingly.

Wood-duck house is only a couple of dollars for material.
To be cheaper I recommend using pine, but if you want a nice one use cedar

you could make a scarf; there's this mesh stuff that you just weave your yarn into to make a scarf with the fuzzy yarn of your choice! it doesn't take very long at all, and i think it's less than $15 for everything.
