If you sit close to the television, close enough that you have a difficult time focusing on the entire picture at once, then yes it can strain your eyes, which is bad. If you watch television in the dark this can also strain your eyes, try leaving a lamp on.

complete myth.kids watch a lot of tv,parents used to assume that if a kid suddenly went from 20/20 vision to needing glasses,that he/she did something-sitting close to tv,reading in dim light,etc.-to "ruin" their eyesight.now we know,that the lenses of the eyes change shape at the onset of puberty-anywhere between 10 and 14 or so,in both boys and girls.in some people,the change is so minor,no change in vision is noted.in others,the lens gets far too round,or far too long,and the child develops nearsightedness,farsightedness or an astigmatism.its really due to a combo of genes/adolescent body changes.
